TEEN (Ages 13+) & ADULT PROGRAM
Our Teen & Adult Program is founded on training students fully in three traditions of fighting:
-
Mantis Boxing (Tanglang Quan) - Mantis Boxing is a traditional Chinese martial art founded approximately 400 years ago during the Qing Dynasty. Being a relatively modern system, Mantis Boxing is a comprehensive system that combines the techniques and principles of many northern Chinese boxing schools and could be considered, one of the earliest verifiable examples of modern mixed martial arts. Mantis Boxing incorporates highly agile footwork, full range rapid-fire striking combinations in addition to a diverse grappling game that includes throwing & take-down, and joint lock & pressure point controlling techniques (Chin Na). The martial art places great emphasis on practicality and as such, free fighting (Sanda/SanShou) is a major component of training.*Note that Mantis Boxing is not to be confused with modern performance kung fu where the performers seek to mimic animal movements, rather the name is in honor and reference to the fighting spirit and ferocity of the praying mantis.
-
Jujitsu - Known as the "Gentle Art" Jujitsu is the grappling art that originated in ancient feudal Japan as a means of dealing with armored opponents and has remained a staple of fighting in modern times, often considered one of the main pillars of modern mixed martial arts. While known as the "Gentle Art" this has nothing to do with being gentle on attackers, but rather on the practitioner, as Jujitsu focuses the grappling side of fighting (throwing, take-downs, leg sweeps, pins, holds, and submissions (joint locks and chokes/strangulation)) vs. dealing with an attacker through forceful striking.
-
Traditional Weapon Fighting - A combination of practical stick (Short & Pole), knife and rope/chain combat based on Historical European Weapon Fighting & Traditional Asian Martial Arts Weapon Fighting.

Our program is taught in the tradition of the two separate lineages that share a commonality in that they have both been field tested and proven effective. Both of Sifu Paul’s instructors, Vinson Holck (20 years on the Tucson Police SWAT team) and Tony Puyot (20 years as a Police Vice Detective in Southern California) are lifelong martial arts masters who refined their training in their day to day jobs. This invaluable experience is the foundation for our proven method of instruction that focuses on a simple and direct 3 level approach to training:
-
Core Basics – We start everyone off learning core principles, movement, obtaining a proficiency with striking and controlling the situation through close quarter's grappling
-
Supplementary Skills – Build upon your basics and supplement in Wrestling/Throwing Skills, Chin Na Controlling and Ground Fighting
-
Advanced Learning – Advanced theory and application, including classical training forms.
*All training incorporates realistic partner application drills and live sparring to learn in a proven, pressure tested environment.
